Use of A and An

Rule: Kisi bhi singular countable noun ke aage a ya an lagaya jaata hai.

Example nouns: apple, boy, cat, dog, umbrella, elephant, pen, table.

Important: Hum starting sound dekhte hain, letter nahi.

👉 Agar word ka first sound vowel hai → An lagate hain.

👉 Agar word ka first sound consonant hai → A lagate hain.

Easy Trick:

  • Vowel chhota hota hai → An (jo bada hai) lagta hai.
  • Consonant bada hota hai → A (jo chhota hai) lagta hai.

Note: Letter dekhkar decide nahi karte, hamesha sound dekhkar decide karte hain ki A lagana hai ya An.

 1. Proper Noun (व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा)

  • Names of Person: –

    Examples: Rahul, Mohan, Manoj, Saurabh, Kareena, Raveena, Sangeeta etc.

  • Names of Countries

    Examples: India, America, Nepal, France, Pakistan etc.

  • Names of Mountain Peaks

    Examples: Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Denali etc.

  • Names of Cities and Towns

    Examples: Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Indore etc.

  • Names of Days of the Week

    Examples: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

  • Names of Months of the Year

    Example: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.

  • Names of Roads and streets

    Examples: Gandhi Road, Fort Road, Dalal Street etc.

  • Names of Festivals

    Examples: Diwali, Holi, Dussehra etc.

2. Material Noun (वस्तुवाचक संज्ञा)

Examples: Gold, Silver, Wood, Milk, Water, etc.

3. Abstract Noun (भाववाचक संज्ञा)

Examples: Bravery, Honesty, Beauty, etc.

4. Names of Subjects of Arts and Sciences

Examples: Mathematics, Physics, Painting, etc.

5. Names of Diseases

Examples: Headache, Asthma, Cough, etc.

6. Names of Books and Dramas (किताब और नाटक)

Examples: Romeo and Juliet, Ramayana, Mahabharata, etc.

7. Names of Company

Example: Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, etc.

8. Names of Sports and Games

Examples: Cricket, Football, PUBG, etc.

9. Names of Languages
