Subject: Request for Immediate Improvement in Disability Access in Public Buildings
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing to express my concern and to seek immediate action regarding the lack of disability access in several public buildings within Chennai. As a person with a disability, I have encountered numerous challenges in accessing public services due to inadequate facilities, such as ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms, in government offices, libraries, and community centers.
The absence of such essential amenities not only restricts our independence and participation in societal activities but also violates our rights as citizens to access public services and facilities. It is disheartening to witness the oversight in ensuring public buildings are inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of physical ability.
Therefore, I urge the Chennai Corporation to:
1. Conduct a comprehensive audit of all public buildings under its jurisdiction to identify and assess accessibility barriers for people with disabilities.
2. Allocate funds and resources to retrofit existing structures with necessary accessibility features, including but not limited to ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms.
3. Implement strict adherence to accessibility standards for all new public building projects, ensuring they are designed with inclusivity in mind from the outset.
4. Develop and enforce guidelines for maintaining accessibility features in public buildings, ensuring they remain functional and accessible at all times.
Improving disability access in public buildings is not only a legal obligation but a moral one, ensuring equality and dignity for all citizens. I trust that the Chennai Corporation will address this issue with the urgency and seriousness it deserves, taking immediate steps to make our city more inclusive and accessible.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I am hopeful for a prompt response and am available for further discussion or to provide any additional information required.
Sincerely,
Sudha Krishnan
